Strong Minds,
Bright Futures:
A Partnership for Child Mental Wellbeing
A growing statewide coalition committed to building a stronger future for Pennsylvania’s children. Launched in response to deep concerns raised by families, educators, health professionals, and youth during The Big Thing—a multi-year, community-driven research initiative, led by Children First, the Partnership is transforming how we support children’s mental health in our schools, communities, and care systems.
Across the Commonwealth, children and families are facing growing mental health challenges—but far too often, the systems meant to support them respond too late or not at all. Guided by five essential reforms, the Partnership is working across sectors to remove barriers to care, expand access to early intervention, and ensure that every child can thrive close to home. With Medicaid policies, local collaboration, and a commitment to prevention, Strong Minds, Bright Futures is building a system that works—for families, providers, and the future of Pennsylvania.

When people can access mental health support earlier and more easily, outcomes improve and costs go down.

In this article about Independence Blue Cross it shows what’s possible when mental health is treated as essential, not separate:
• Faster access to care
• Better matching to providers
• Fewer emergency visits
• Improved outcomes
This is the approach Strong Minds, Bright Futures is working to bring to children and families across PA.
Because too often, young people face long wait times in confusing systems that largely provide support only after crisis.
We don’t need to reinvent the system. We need access to what works:
• Support in schools and communities
• Access before crisis
• A stronger workforce for 2026
• Systems that actually connect
Every child deserves support where and when they need it.

A story out of the Lehigh Valley is a reminder of what too many families are facing.
www.wfmz.com/news/schools/bullying-in-the-lehigh-valley-a-parents-public-cry-for-help/article_73c...
A parent shared how bullying led to a situation that became, in her words, “a matter of life and death” for her daughter.
Across Pennsylvania, young people are telling us the same things:
- Support is too hard to access.
- Help often comes too late.
- And too many children are left to navigate this alone.
At Strong Minds, Bright Futures, we believe the answer is not just reacting to crisis, it’s building a system that supports young people before things escalate.
That means:
- More mental health support in schools
- Trusted adults students can turn to early
- Services that are accessible, coordinated, and easy to navigate
- Support not just for those being harmed, but for young people who are struggling and acting out
Because bullying doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it reflects unmet needs on all sides.
We have the tools to do this. What we need is the commitment to change what isn't working.
